Haymarket makes for one of the best eating adventures in all of Sydney city. It's where Chinatown, Thaitown and Koreatown meet. The look and feel of Sydney's OG Koreatown on Pitt St and Liverpool St has changed over the years but recently there's been a resurgence of new Korean eateries and businesses around Haymarket which have brought K-culture back to life in a post-lockdown city. Let's visit THREE places together!
Bornga is my favourite Korean BBQ in the city and arguably the whole of Sydney. The meat quality here is fantastic. Definitely order the signature woo samgyeop (thinly sliced beef loin), and indulge in the wagyu beef intercostal, beef rib, marinated wagyu and pork neck as well. Those are my go-tos here! It took me a couple of visits to realise there was a whole unlimited self serve banchan (Korean side dish) station AND you can grab unlimited leaves of lettuce and perilla too. Bornga is everything great about KBBQ!
Next door is Photo Signature, a Korean photobooth pop-up. You see, photobooths are all the rage over there in Korea. It's a favourite past-time of many. There are different colour booths, different background themes you can add to your photo printouts, different props, hats and decorations you can put on, etc. It's good fun!
Now in a city where everyone complains about the lack of nightlife and late night dining options, there's a few Korean bars and 'pochas' around Haymarket that open until 5:30 in the morning on weekends! Squid Pocha is one of them. Under coloured lights and TV screens blaring loud K-pop music videos, enjoy some late night drinks with crispy fried chicken (by a Chicken V @chickenvsydney kitchen). Some say beer and fried chicken are the perfect match, but I personally love drinking with spicy food which there's plenty of here!
Hope you enjoy discovering Korean food in Haymarket!
